High School Summer Science Research Programme kicks off at Pakistan Science Foundation

Islamabad, July 09, 2013 (PPI-OT): The High School Summer Science Research Programme (HSSSRP), jointly organized by Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), Pakistan Society of Computational Science/Biology (PSCS) and Embassy of France in Pakistan, kicked off at PSF on Tuesday.

PSF Chairman Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro, the Chief Guest, announced the programme opened at the inaugural ceremony attended by participants of the camp, their mentors, teachers, students and scientists from different organizations.

PSCS President Dr. Ismail, PSF Board of Trustees Member Dr. Aslam Baig, PSF Member Science Dr. Khalil Ahmed Ibupoto and Principal Scientific Officer Dr. Naushaba Atta and Cultural Attache of French embassy Gilles Angles were also present at the inaugural ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion Dr. Soomro highlighted PSF activities for promotion of S and T research and popularization of science in the country. He spoke at length about collaborative programmes of the Foundation, especially joint activities of PSF, Intel Pakistan, National Centre for Physics, UNESCO, European Union, British Council, different universities of Pakistan and Embassy of France in Pakistan. He stressed the need for expansion of this network to get desired results of science culture in the country.

He assured the participants and organizers of the programme of PSF and academia network’s full support to make this high school summer research programme a success story.

Dr. Ismail said the purpose of HSSSRP is to promote science at school level and give high school students hands-on research experience by working on research projects with top class scientists from public and private universities in different parts of Pakistan. We hope that this experience will encourage our students for science and have positive impact on student interest in careers in science disciplines, he added.

He said the one way to enter into the list of developed countries is to promote science and technology at all levels in academia and industry. He said the objective of the camp is to just develop the habit of thinking among students on various phenomenon of science.

Cultural Attache of French embassy Gilles Angles said the French Embassy is working in partnership with PSF to introduce science to students, which is a major challenge. He hoped that this programme will help to cope with this challenge.

PSF Member Science Dr. Ibupoto, Dr. Aslam Baig and Dr. Naushaba Atta also spoke on this occasion. Earlier, a group of students gave a presentation on “Why Sky Looks Dark at Night?”. They explained this phenomenon through experiments and left some questions for audience to think and find their answers.
